Premium7 exercises · about 10 minutes

Pronouns save us from repeating nouns. In this lesson you will practise choosing the right personal pronoun for the subject and object positions you learnt about earlier.

Definition

A personal pronoun stands for a person or thing, and it has a subject form used before the verb and an object form used after a verb or preposition.

Examples

  • She manages the canteen at our office.
  • Our coach praised us.
  • Raju and I are colleagues.
  • The gift is from Leela and me.
  • They invited him to the party.

How it works

Subject forms

Use I, we, you, he, she, it, they when the pronoun does the action.

We reached the hall early.

Object forms

Use me, us, you, him, her, it, them after a verb or a preposition such as to, with, for, between.

The manager spoke to them.

The cover-up test

When a pronoun is paired with a name, hide the name and read the sentence again. The form that sounds right alone is correct.

Mum called Sita and me. (Mum called me.)

Polite order

Put the other person first and yourself last: you and I, Rina and me.

My friend and I joined a dance class.
